Connecting Computers Via UTP

If you, like me, have ever wondered why it isn’t possible to network two computers with UTP (phone jack style) cable like we used to with the old black coax, well you can. The problem is wires need to be switched around to stop each computer trying to send up the other’s down line, so to speak. Hexus have produced an excellent article on making a crossover adapter, or you can just use the wiring diagram to rewire one connection on your cable.

I would, however, suggest you follow their instructions and not my example. I did it all by hand without any of the proper tools (my Dad always said “right tool for the right job”, but he didn’t tell me that tool may cost more than I can afford). My backyard hack utilised a screwdriver, a nail-file, and lots of finger pain. Oh yeah, and after hours of fiddling it didn’t work - something wrong with the cable.
