Bring on 2001

Splash pretty much covered it, and no-one wants to read a long list of thankyou’s, so I’ll spare you my end of year sentimentalities. Don’t bother writing in, your silent thanks is enough :)

BigKid is actually coming up to it’s third year in 2001. I was thinking yesterday how although the pressure to post every day can be daunting (to say nothing of time consuming articles), BK has remained a joy to work on. It continually surprises and delights me that we have a regular readership who read what we write. When I took the idea for this site to Bruce and Rob several years ago (after reading how Anand started his hardware site), the biggest perk I could imagine was getting free review copies of games. Of course I didn’t realise that each copy then became a responsibility to 1: Play, and 2: Review intelligently (by the way, those companies wondering where the reviews of their AAA titles are, they are coming I promise :).

But what took me by surprise was the continual, slow-burning enjoyment being webmaster on an international site brings. I can’t explain it. You’d have to experience it to know. After my involvement in traditional print media (newspapers etc.), the immediacy and ease of web publishing is a dream. In newspapers, if you’re a day late you’re old. On the Net, if it’s been up for an hour it’s passe. We are experiencing a revolution in communication. I never forget that, and I can never be blase about it.

I know I said I had no thank-you’s but actually there are three I must make. Rob for his continual work, enthusiasm, and industry contacts (I keep forgetting names), Bruce for his endless hours of back-end coding, site design, and good taste, and his partner Allie for her occasional reviews and great Mango Daquiri’s, and finally Splash (David) for his enormous and inspired editorial input. There are many others who contribute (including our car sim expert Shane), and you know who you are. Thank you.

So that’s it for this year. Here’s to a great 2001 - despite some industry pessimism I’m convinced it is going to be a really good year for gaming, particularly in Australia. Be safe during the New Year. Please don’t drink and drive - car accidents are the greatest killer of young men under 30, and the majority of those deaths are alcohol related. Bus it. Catch a cab. Live.

From all of us at BigKid, Happy New Year.
