Cable At Last!

Well, our local telecommunications company Telstra turned up today and as I type I’m on a permanent cable connection. The installation was surprisingly easy. The technician ran the cable around the outside of my dodgy little unit and punched a hole into the office at the back - brutal, but quite neat (it beat drilling through 3 solid cement walls inside). After a few problems with ethernet card and modem conflicts (the modem is now packed away and my old LAN card is temporarily uninstalled), it’s running like a dream. Had I the option to go Optus (the other broadband provider) I would have, but they don’t yet offer cable in this street.

After seeing Rob download at 100KB/s+ on his Optus connection, I was keen to blow the cobwebs out of my setup. However, I soon discovered the Telstra download speed is capped at around 60KB/s (the theoretical limit is 64), which is less than I had hoped. Still, Dingo Blue for their long and patient service. Oh yeah, and no more annoying disconnections.

If you’re in the US you probably are so used to broadband it’s passe now. But here in Oz, it’s like a cool drink of water. Next time I meet you on a CS server, we’ll be on an even playing field. I can’t wait. Speaking of which…
