Microsoft Acquires Digital Anvil

Ok, they just went and made it personal.

Bringing to an end today the rumours surrounding the state of Freelancer and Chris Robert’s involvement in the company he started, Microsoft announced that they had acquired Digital Anvil. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft would also acquire the rights to “select Digital Anvil titles, including Freelancer” as well as an un-announced X-Box title.

Also announced in this press release, Chris Roberts has indeed left the company “to pursue other creative endeavours”. It does, however, state that Chris will act as a creative consultant on the continued development of Freelancer and see it through to completion.

“This acquisition is a positive growth opportunity for Digital Anvil,” Roberts said. “Under the Microsoft umbrella, ‘FreeLancer’ and other games will be supported by a strong infrastructure and realized in the spirit in which they were conceived.”

Freelancer is scheduled to be released late next year, though no announcement yet how much, if at all, the final game will change from Chris Robert’s original vision.
