Intel Ditches Dual-Chip P4
Intel’s new Pentium 4 chip will be released on Monday without Shared Memory Multiprocessor (SMP) capablity, despite previous promotion of a dual-chip platform. The introductory 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz CPUs will be single processor only. Processors capable of running in dual-chip systems won’t be available until the second half of 2001. Meanwhile, in a move to take advantage of Intel’s decision, AMD plans to introduce a chipset capable of handling two Athlons by the beginning of next year.
