No More 3dfx Cards
In a reversal of a decision made two years ago, video card manufacturer 3dfx has announced it will no longer make graphics cards. The US graphics chip innovater will instead concentrate on making it’s proprietary 3D accelerator processors and sell them to third party companies for manufacture into retail cards. The direction change, which has come about through an attempt to stop growing fiscal losses as a result of poor sales of the Voodoo 5500, involves the closure of 3dfx’s Mexican card manufacturing plant purchased in 1999.
Following yesterday’s announcement that the anticipated Voodoo 5 6000’s will not be going into production, the new information means the Voodoo 5500 is officially the last 3dfx video card. It’s a good thing we got one in time to review it :) It also ties in with some things told to me off the record during an AGDC intervew with 3dfx Developer Relations contact Karen Gleitsmann.
I will be officially releasing the (on-the-record) interview later tonight, but if you’re keen a transcript is available here. I’d love to tell you the other stuff, but if I did, they’d have to kill me.
