Media Violence Causes Violence?
A US Psychology professor has debunked accepted claims that violence in media produces violence in watchers as “totally bogus”. In a new 481 page review, Toronto University Psychology professor Jonathan Freedman challenges the oft quoted figure of 1000 studies “proving” the case against media violence, saying the figure is actually 200 and the evidence is completely inconclusive. Freedman’s report makes a strong case against popular assertions that depictions of violence produce violent behaviour - a current hot potato in the game industry - until you read right at the end of an ABC article that his research has been funded by the Motion Picture Association of America. And there goes the objectivity.
