Lieberman Talks Game Violence

US Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman has long seemed to have video games in his cross-hairs. He has more than once denounced game violence and lead many in the industry to believing that, if elected, he would make it his business to see strict regulations placed upon developers.

It is a surprise then to see Lieberman interviewed on Daily Radar. The short Q&A tackels the issue of violence in video games, ratings and so forth. Lieberman is, of course, guarded in his responses, but it does make for an interesting read.

DR: Many recent studies show no link between playing a violent game like Quake, and violent behavior (but have shown that one’s predisposition to violence is essentially preset and not affected by access to violent media). Do you agree with those findings?

JL: Most critics do not argue that media violence directly causes violent behavior; the research has not shown a causal link. However, the research has conclusively proven that prolonged exposure to media violence can be harmful to children, desensitizing them to real-life violence and its consequences, exaggerating their sense of the dangers around them, and increasing the tendency toward aggressive behavior. And the public health community has reached a consensus that a heavy diet of media violence is one risk factor for violent behavior.

First music, then Tv now gameing… I dont suppose the lack of parents discplining kids now days has anything to do with it? Most of these kids that go the lone gunman at school seem to be loner types often picked on that snap. What house with kids doesn’t have some type of gameing system, Tv, radio etc…

Could it be that these few kids out of millions of kids that play violent games just have issues?
