More On Auran Jet

Discussion over proposed licensing options for Auran’s soon to be released Jet game development engine is continuing on the company’s forums. In response to one question, Auran’s John Banks has confirmed that developers who fix a bug in the engine are required to submit the correction, which is then understood to be owned by Auran:

As I understand it, you’re asking if you fix a bug in Jet, do you have to give us the fix, or can you just continue using the old version of Jet with your fix.

The relevant section of the Free Access License states:

“If your modifications or additions to the Software cannot be reasonably considered to be independent and separate works in themselves, or are simply corrections or amendments to the Software, then you agree that such modifications and additions become part of the Software and will be owned by Auran. Accordingly, you hereby assign to Auran all intellectual property rights in such modifications and additions made by you or your employees or under your control.”

It also states that you should send us a copy. But that said, you are entitled to continue to use your current version of AURAN Jet and are not required to incorporate any updates that we might make available from time to time. So we see no problem with continuing to use a current version of Jet as modified by you.

In reply to another post, John has also confirmed the Auran Jet Beta 1 release will only support 3D Studio Max version 2.5. Those wanting to export custom models from within later versions of StudioMax and other modelling packages will be able to do so in subsequent Jet releases.
