SegaNet has landed
The first ISP dedicated to console gaming has finally launched in the US. Originally the service was planned to launch with Quake 3 but that was not to be. In any case, the first game to be playable on SegaNet is the widely heralded NFL2K1. A further 24 games are planned to be released before the holidays in the US.
It seems that Sega has really woken up to the current shaky position of the Dreamcast in the console arena. Along with the launch of SegaNet, Sega intends to start an aggressive, new and yet somehow familiar advertising campaign, that’s right the ‘Sega scream’ is making a comeback, baby! Well, it sure beats the “it’s thinking” line of ‘commercials’…anything would beat the “it’s thinking” line of ‘commercials’.
SegaNet has been in the works for quite sometime now and almost all of the testers of the system had only good things to say about it. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft will be very interested in the developments of this ISP and there is no doubt they will be looking on quite intently to see where they can improve on the implementation for their respective upcoming services.
Apparently Canadians and Europeans will also be offered the SegaNet service sometime in the not too distant future. Logically, Australia should also be provided with some kind of ISP but going by the launch of the Dreamcast here, it is anyone’s guess as to when we’ll see SegaNet in full swing, here’s hoping!
SegaNet, the ‘Sega scream’ and the recent price cut of Dreamcast could boost Sega’s bottom line and in fact, if done right, may be able to catapult Sega into a commanding position in the next generation console market share.
