Battle Top World Championships

Being held around the world over the coming weeks, including Australia, is a world wide competition being run by a Korean company called Battle Top. Apparently the Australian championships, with people competing in Quake 3, Starcraft: Brood War, FIFA 2000 and Age of Empires 2 are being held at I Starzone, which is located at B1, 841 George St., Sydney, NSW.

I will admit that I am somewhat confused by the information that is out there at the moment and can’t quite make sense of it all. If anyone can send me some info to post clearing the situation up, I would greatly appreciate it.

*UPDATE*
Jem’Hadar of Challenge-AU dropped me a line and filled me in on exactly what is going on.

From what u can read, it is obviously a Qualifier for a big international tournament

It is being run by Battletop (www.battletop.com) which is a Korean based company. In Korea, professional gaming is really big, especially Starcraft and just lately, Quake3.

The Qualifiers are to find the best players of Starcraft, Quake3 and FIFA 2000 in the country and send them to the Battletop World Cyber Championships in Korea during October. There, the best from each country will fight it out to find the best in the world, and possibly win $300,000US.

Now, we ONLY found out about the Australian Qualifier LAST NIGHT, and it WAS scheduled for THIS Thursday! I mean, this is meant to be the largest tournament in Australia and there was no announcement/publications. How are the interstate players meant to organise their trips to Sydney in time?

Also, their website lacks all the details for the tournament. No indication whether is it BYO computer, rules, layout, draws etc.

It has now been pushed back to the 20th-24th, which is right in the middle of the Olympics. This makes it even harder for the interstaters to arrange accommodation etc.

basically….. lack of organisations, for a large tournament with prize money of AU$100,000. Add to that, a chance to be flown to Korea to get a chance at $300,000US, people are pretty pissed about it all.

So there you have it. Much thanks to Jem for filling me in. The Challenge-AU news page has been updated with reports that similar problems are being experienced in the US as well as UK. Head on over to the site to stay updated with the progress of the tournament.

If anyone has any additional comments they’d like to share, be sure to drop us a line with your thoughts on the matter. We’ll keep you updated with news about the competiton as we recieve it.
