Playstation 2 Australian Release

Are you Australian? If so, would you be willing to pay $749 dollars for a Playstation 2?

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia certainly thinks a lot of you will. We’ll have to wait until November 30 to find out if they’re right.

Now, even with the woeful performance of the Australian Dollar, current conversion rates mean that you’ll be paying around $135 US more than your American counterparts. Rough, huh?

Historically, a console has never developed a significant installed base selling at numbers even remotely like this. So does that mean SCE Australia is crazy? Or are they just calculating: looking toward a quick cash-in on early adopters, with a view to dropping the price in a few months to get the mass market sell through numbers?

Golly, it couldn’t be something that shameless, I guess they must just be crazy.
