CPU Battle Hots Up
Hot on the heels of industry rumours that Intel will release improved versions of its 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 chip due in the fourth quarter this year, a new CPU manufacturer has announced a 1GHz processor. Taiwan’s Via Technologies expects to produce Samuel 2 processors running at speeds in excess of the golden 1GHz benchmark by the first half of 2001. The Samuel 2 is a follow-up to the Samuel 1 released this year which runs at speeds of 500 and 600MHz.
Intel is expected to meet the challenge with the Talatin, a version of the P3 made on the 0.13 micron process with a larger secondary cache and a 200MHz bus, and the Northwood, an improved P4 running at 2GHz.
The company’s traditional competitor AMD is expected to release enhanced versions of it’s Athlon (K7) chip later this year, the Mustang, Corvette and Camaro. Hammer, the successor to Athlon, will debut in 2002.
