Carmack on Console’s vs. PCs

id code cool dude John Carmack (these Carmack alliterations are getting harder - it’s a good thing he’s not in the news much lately, I’m running out of words) spent the majority of his annual QuakeCon speech expounding upon the console versus PC debate. QuakeCon is a yearly LAN of thousands of gamers in Mesquite, Texas who come to view the latest Quake engine developments while fragging each other as often as possible. This year’s was bigger than ever with more than 2000 attendees. The highlight of the meeting is always a relaxed, off the cuff lecuture by id Software founder John Carmack. This year he asked the question “Is The PC Dead?” and expanded upon his oft repeated answer - “Not On Your Nelly” - in a Gamespy article:

The PC area has always had a kind of fly-by-wire approach. As long as you get some really cool new stuff out of the deal, Carmack explained, people are willing to accept the necessary patches and tweaking that are inherent in PCs. “The PC market is not about trying to make things perfect,” he said, “but about trying to make things quickly and fast and trying new things.” Consoles are often touted as the latest, greatest thing that’s going to wipe away PCs, but for every great advancement in consoles, you have another half-step advancement in PC technology that will always keep PCs and consoles roughly equally powerful in terms of system specs.

There is some other interesting stuff there on expected future trends and why id continues to support Linux.
