Itanium Chip Postponed

Intel has pushed back the shipping date of it’s new 64-bit Itanium processor due to testing and revision tasks. The chip was initially expected in the third quarter, but now won’t ship before the fourth. As a result the Itanium won’t be available generally until next year. Itanium, which was previously known as Merced, is expected to debut at speeds of 733MHz and 800MHz.

In an unrelated move, Intel has also cut the price of Pentium 3 and Xeon prices by up to 24 percent, presumably to prepare for the 1.13GHz P3 chip due out on July 31.
