Overview of Australia’s Internet Links

After posting a small piece of news earlier this week about the fact that Australia’s Battlenet servers are being moved from Asia to US West, I decided to have a look into the issue myself. I was mainly interested in finding out what kind of bandwidth is actually available to us here in OZ. Luckily a work collegue pointed me in the right direction and here’s what was available on the Telstra BigPond Direct site:

Telstra Big Pond Direct connects to the global Internet via 470 Mbps to the USA including a 135 Mbps international satellite link, 45 Mbps to NZ, 10 Mbps to Japan, 4 Mbps to South Korea, 4 Mbps to Hong Kong, 4 Mbps to Singapore, 2 Mbps to Taiwan and 2 Mbps to Malaysia.

The current configuration of the Telstra Big Pond Direct backbone is shown here.

So as you can see the link to the US is far better than that of Asia. Still, I’ve heard that some people found the Asia sever fine during the Diablo II stress test.
Something to keep in mind though is that Optus is rolling out its own high bandwidth network reported to be hundreds of Gigabits/sec. While they will be sharing this line they could expect to get a decent chunk of it. I will look into this a lot further and see what else I can find out on the subject. Of course if you have any info that you can provide please feel free to let us know.
