Volition brings AA to the PS2
Ex-PC developers Volition say they have solved the Anti-Aliasing dilemma thought to have faced developers working on the Playstation 2.
According to a Daily Radar Interview, Volition implemented its Full Screen Anti Aliasing in a day, courtesy of new and clarified information from Sony. Perhaps the most interesting answer of the interview was this succinct response:
DR: So, with Summoner full scene anti-aliased, what kind of drop are you seeing in framerate or performance?
Volition: Zero.
However, after the posting of some accompanying media, a number of readers posted to the Volition forum with claims that aliasing was clearly still visible in the screen shots.
The developers responded, saying that this is a result of the interlaced nature of the technique (and television in general). A single screenshot fails to make use of the interlacing fields, which is part of Volition’s Solution.
Additionally, Lead Programmer James Hague notes that their technique also reduces the inherent flicker of television’s interlacing, making for a more soothing (and less seizure inducing?) visual bombardment.
