Patent Claim to Increase DDR RAM Prices
Memory manufacturer Rambus Inc. is set to boost the price of DRAM following a patent settlement with Hitachi over synchronous memory interface technology. The company has admitted planning to exact high royalty payments on DDR SDRAM in order to push the price of the memory up. The idea behind the enforced price hike is to make DDR SDRAM more expensive than Rambus Inc.’s competing Direct Rambus memory.
Strip away the business jingoism, and what it means is that Rambus Inc. are pushing up the price of SDRAM in order to force people to buy their product. That means we’ll be paying more for CPUs and video cards among other things. Did I mention my dislike for business suits?
