Transmeta Driven PCs

Rival chip manufacturer Transmeta Corp. is expected to announce next week that IBM and NEC will make notebooks using the company’s Crusoe processor. A handful of OEMs will display ultralight notebooks utilizing the chips at a demonstration in New York. The Crusoe belongs to a new class of processor including Intel’s Willamette which translates code on the fly, optimizing it for each particular hardware configuration and situation. Transmeta’s processor was unveiled earlier this year to industry acclaim, but previously had not attracted manufacturer interest.
